5 Ways To Powerfully Close A Decade
Updated: Dec 12, 2019
Every year around this time I like to do a year in review, however this year is so much bigger because it's a whole decade in review. Wowzers has it been an adventurous 10 years! I don’t think there has ever been another chapter where I’ve experienced more change yet more growth. If I went back in time & asked my 29 year old self there would be no way she would have predicted the journey that lie ahead. Here’s a list of some of the biggest twists & turns of my 2010’s.
1 marriage, 1 divorce, 4 relocations (Carlsbad, Bentonville, Sydney, Encinitas), 1 permanent residency in Australia, 1 solo 9 month trip with a backpack, 21 countries visited (Argentina, Chile, Belize, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, UK, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Malta, Canada), 2 homes bought, 2 homes sold, 2 rented flats abroad, 1 rented beach bungalow, 2 stents living with my dad (AR & CA), 1 corporate employer (6 different roles), 1 resignation, 1 business launch, 1 new career, 4 yoga teacher trainings, 2 yoga retreats in Bali (one as a student one as the teacher), 1 full knee reconstruction, 1 broken collarbone, 2 heartbreaking deaths (Gee Gee & Stella), 1 long distance relationship, & 1 serious boyfriend.
This last decade has been a roller coaster of the highest highs and the lowest lows but each piece has woven together to create a beautiful character building novel. Want to see how I got to this viewpoint? Check out the list below.
5 Ways To Powerfully Close A Decade
Step 1: Reflect with an open mind & loving heart on the last decade.
What were your highest highs & lowest lows? What was expected? What was a shock? Who was by your side? What growth did you experience? Feel free to flip through your old pictures, posts, emails, calendars to help make a list of everything that pops into your mind. Once you have your list go back & circle anything that jumps out. Now articulate why this was important. What did you learn?
Step 2: Ask yourself the tough question: If you knew you had only 5-10 years left to live what does your life look like?
What dreams must you accomplish? What trips do you need to take? What people do you need to love more? Who do you want to become? What does your heart want to do? What changes do you need to make? Let your imagination run wild and capture as many ideas as possible.
Step 3: Clear the path.
What obstacles could stand in your way of achieving your dream life? What do you need to let go? What baggage are you still holding on to? Who do you need to forgive? What limiting core beliefs do you need to rewrite?
Step 4: Bring that vision to life.
Boy do I love a good vision board! Before the end of the year challenge yourself to create a vision for your next year or even your next decade. There are so many ways to do this. You could make a folder on your phone & start taking photos of anything you find inspiring for your 2020s journey. You could create an online Pinterest board of images that represent your dreams. You could buy a new journal & write a letter to your 2020 self. You could create a video of yourself talking about your dreams. Or if you’re old fashion like me you could get a load of your favorite mags, have some of your besties over, grab the scissors & glue sticks, and have a vision boarding party.
Step 5: Commit to that vision.
Place your creation somewhere you can see it on a regular basis. Show & tell with others. Send all kinds of energy to it because as the saying goes “dreams flow where energy goes.”
So as you can see I started the decade in white & now I’m ending it in a much lighter, brighter, wiser white - excited to lean into the next decade. Bring on 2020!
